Comments in Farseer

Comments let you attach notes, questions, and feedback directly to individual cells. They are essential for collaboration — especially in planning workflows where modelers and planners need to communicate about specific data points.

Cells with comments display a colored corner marker, making it easy for anyone viewing the sheet to see where discussions are happening.

Adding a Comment

  1. Right-click any cell

  2. Select Add Comment

  3. Type your message and submit

The cell will now display a visual indicator (colored corner marker) so other users can see that a comment exists.

Viewing & Replying

Click on any cell that has a comment marker. The comment thread opens in a side panel showing all messages in chronological order.

You can:

  • Reply to continue the conversation

  • Edit your own comments

  • Delete your own comments

All comments persist on the cell, providing a full conversation history for audit and context.

Thread Options

Each comment thread has additional actions available from the thread header:

  • Go to Row: Navigates directly to the row containing the commented cell — useful when browsing comments from the comments panel without knowing the exact location

  • Mark as Resolved: Closes the thread to indicate the discussion is complete. Resolved threads are hidden by default but can be viewed again using the filter

  • Mark as In Review: Flags the thread as under review — helpful during approval workflows where a value needs verification before being finalized

  • Mark as Unresolved: Reopens a resolved or in-review thread if the discussion needs to continue

  • Delete Thread: Permanently removes the entire comment thread from the cell. This cannot be undone

These statuses make it easy to track which discussions are still active, which are pending review, and which have been closed out.

Mentioning Users

Use @ followed by a user’s name to mention them directly in a comment. Mentioned users receive a notification, making it easy to:

  • Request input on a specific value

  • Flag items for review

  • Assign follow-up actions to specific people

Permissions

Comments require the Comments feature permission. Without it, users cannot view, create, edit, or delete comments.

Administrators should enable this permission for any group that participates in collaborative workflows — for example, both Modelers and Planners in a planning process.

Comments in Collaboration

Comments are commonly used alongside tracked shares to coordinate work between roles:

  • A Modeler can comment on a cell to instruct a Planner what data to fill in

  • A Planner can reply to confirm completion or ask clarifying questions

  • Comments persist on the cell, providing a full conversation history for audit and context

Use Cases

  • Budget reviews: Leave notes on specific line items explaining assumptions or requesting changes

  • Planning cycles: Modelers instruct planners what data to enter, planners reply with questions or confirmation

  • Data quality: Flag unusual values for investigation

  • Approvals: Confirm that values have been reviewed and approved
