What Are Dimension Tables?

Dimension Table UI

Dimension tables are fundamental building blocks in Farseer. They help you organize your company’s structure and categorize data—such as departments, products, brands, clients, markets, or regions. Dimensions enable filtering, grouping, and accurate analysis across your entire model.

Creating a New Dimension Table

To create a new dimension table:

  1. Open the right-hand sidebar.

  2. Right-click Dimensions.

  3. Select New Dimension Table.

Your new dimension table becomes immediately available across sheets, dashboards, and all modeling components.

You can also create folders in the Dimensions section to better organize multiple tables and maintain a clean model structure—especially useful as your workspace grows.

All tables and folders can be reordered anytime by dragging them to the desired position.

Create a Dimension Member

The "New Member" Button

To add a new member to a dimension table:

  1. Select the dimension table.

  2. Click New Member in the top-right corner.

The new member is added to the bottom of the table. Each member functions as a primary key, meaning it must be unique within that table to avoid duplicates.

You can also add a member directly by typing a new name into an empty row of the table.

You can also type into blank cells to create a new member

Why Dimensions Matter

Using Dimensions provides several key benefits:

  • Single source of truth: Data is stored once, reducing duplication and preventing errors.

  • Permanent storage: Data is safely and efficiently stored in the database.

  • Hierarchies: Dimensions can be linked into hierarchies, enabling better organization and deeper analysis.
